Critical Thinking A
Course Description: This course is designed for advanced ESL students. Using authentic radio commentaries from National Public Radio, it presents an integrated approach to developing critical thinking skills. Each unit explores a controversial issue of international appeal. Students will be called upon to
discuss the commentaries with the aim of assimilating different points of view, thereby challenging previously held beliefs. The writing exercises focus on a grammatical structure used in the commentary. These structures have been chosen to respond to the advanced learner’s needs in developing more sophisticated forms in writing.
Course Goal: Students will develop their competence in listening to and thinking critically about native spoken English in the authentic setting of radio commentaries.
Course Objective: Students will practice listening to, writing about and discussing controversial issues.
Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to understand and comment on controversial political and social issues. They will also be able to write well-organized persuasive essays on various topics.
