Course Description: This course is designed for advanced ESL students. It integrates critical thinking and an
enhanced focus on academic skills such as drawing inferences, synthesizing, note taking and test taking to help students develop strategies for success in the classroom and on standardized tests. Students will be called upon to listen to authentic radio reports, interviews, or other genre that addresses the unit topic. Then, the class members will discuss the selection they have heard, make inferences about it and, finally, express their opinions. Thus listening and speaking are integrated.
Course Goal: Students will develop their competence in critical listening and speaking with poise.
Course Objective: Students will practice listening for main ideas, details and implied content. They will also practice thinking critically about what they hear and expressing themselves orally in a cogent fashion.
Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to understand native English spoken in authentic settings
and to draw inferences from same. They will also be able to clearly assert in English their reasoned opinions about controversial topics.
