Written Structure A
Course Description: This course is designed for intermediate ESL students. It reviews and expands upon basic verb constructions through dialogue performance and creation. Students will be called upon to write about their life experiences and then read their essays aloud. The class will be introduced to important topics in U.S. civics, such as America’s Founding Fathers, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Constitution. In addition, pragmatic life skills--like workplace communication, filling out job applications and checking in at a hospital—will be addressed.
Course Goal: Students will develop their competence in constructing meaning from dialogues illustrative of various intermediate verb tenses.
Course Objective: Students will practice performing and creating dialogues containing target grammatical structures. In addition, they will complete writing assignments designed to provide an opportunity for students to use in original composition the grammar they have just learned.
Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to communicate orally in many situations, employing intermediate verb tenses and vocabulary and will be able to express their ideas in written form in the said manner.

Through readings and collaborative class exercises, students will be introduced to dozens of common and valuable idiomatic expressions, including phrasal verbs that native speakers use in both formal and informal settings. Students will be encouraged to incorporate the idioms into their own writing and speaking.
Course Goal: Students will develop their competence in noticing, understanding and using 82 verb idioms.
Course Objective: Students will practice, with classmates, reading and speaking verb idioms, phrasal verbs in particular.
Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to recognize and incorporate into their own speech and writing the idiomatic expressions studied, especially the phrasal verbs.

The class will engage in reading activities that transition into writing assignments, thereby learning the inextricable link between the two language components. Critical thinking skills are stressed throughout the course.
Course Goal: Students will develop their competence in vocabulary and reading as they advance toward improved writing skills and completion of a writing task.
Course Objective: Students will practice reading articles and from which they will identify the main ideas and make inferences. They will also practice the steps in the writing process.
Student Learning Outcome: Students will be able to read analytically with full comprehension and they will be able to write a well-organized essay.
